It was a softer-than-usual weekend at the box office, the lowest we've seen since September 2023. While Oscar weekend tends to be quieter, this was a bit more subdued than past years. Not to worry, though—there are some promising titles on the horizon that should boost those numbers. In the meantime, Captain America: Brave New World continues its reign, holding the #1 spot for the third week in a row.

Despite the overall slowdown, with box office revenue down 31% and admissions down 27% from the previous weekend, the year-to-date box office is actually 8% ahead of last year! We've already surpassed the $1B mark, which is a great sign.

The only new wide release was Last Breath, starring Woody Harrelson, which debuted at #2 with a respectable $8M and 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, Captain America held strong, taking 26% of admissions and ~$14.8M of the box office revenue. The Monkey, last week's horror premiere, is holding steady, and Paddington in Peru is showing good legs. It's worth noting that The Lion King is still in the top 10 after 11 weeks, which shows how strong family-friendly titles are.

Looking Ahead:

This weekend sees the release of Mickey 17, a sci-fi comedy from the director of Parasite, starring Robert Pattinson. It's had some release delays, but anticipation is building. Predictions are around $18M, which is solid, though it did have a $118M production budget. There are also a number of limited releases that should benefit the art house circuit.
