Disney's Snow White Takes a Bite Out of the Box Office | Weekend of March 27th, 2025

This week, Disney's Snow White made a significant entrance, taking a commanding 63% of admissions and 57% of box office revenue. While it might have fallen a bit short of the loftiest expectations, it still gave the box office a good boost, increasing by 43% from last week. We were hoping for that $100M weekend, but it's still a solid showing.
Snow White's strong performance is notable, especially considering its family-friendly nature, which often translates to higher admissions due to ticket pricing. While reviews have been a bit mixed, with critics praising star Rachel Zeigler but offering a more lukewarm reception to the movie overall, audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are more positive at 74%. It's clear that audiences are becoming increasingly discerning in their choices, which is something for studios to keep in mind.
It's also worth noting that Snow White was a significant investment for Disney, with a production cost exceeding $250M. The film had a lengthy production and faced some challenges, which makes its performance all the more interesting. However, it's important to remember that classic stories don't always translate perfectly to modern audiences, and the film's performance should be viewed in that context.
Beyond Snow White, the top 10 rankings for admissions and revenue were largely consistent, indicating a fairly balanced performance across the board. Black Bag performed well, coming in at #2 in box office revenue, but it was bested by both Novocaine and Captain America: Brave New World in admissions. This shows that while Black Bag drew in dollars, Novocaine and Captain America attracted a larger number of moviegoers.
The Alto Knights also premiered this weekend, directed by Barry Levinson and starring Robert De Niro. While its opening weekend of $3.2M might not be spectacular, it's important to acknowledge the diverse range of films finding their audience.
While Ash and Locked, which we highlighted last week, didn't crack the top 10, it's worth noting that they had limited releases. A wider rollout could potentially change their trajectory.
Looking Ahead:
This weekend brings the release of Death of a Unicorn, a dark comedy starring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd. The title alone is intriguing, and it could draw in audiences looking for something a bit different.
Also opening is Working Man. Despite its potential for action with Jason Statham and David Ayer, early reviews suggest it might be a more subdued affair.
