Dog Man held onto its #1 spot this Super Bowl weekend, which isn't surprising—it's a kid-friendly film in its second week. It grabbed 31% of admissions and $13.8M of the box office dollars. Super Bowl weekend always means a quieter time at the movies; that's just how it goes. Trends year over year, even pre-pandemic, are pretty consistent. This past weekend was down 37% from the previous one, which is exactly what we saw last year. Back in 2020, pre-pandemic, it was down 34%.

Heart Eyes beat out the other new release, Love Hurts, claiming 14% and 10% of tickets respectively.

Mufasa: The Lion King snagged 7% of all ticket sales even in its eighth weekend, further showing the power of family-friendly titles.

Looking Ahead:

Captain America: Brave New World is the big release this weekend. Predictions are around $90M for the 4-day holiday weekend. Being under two hours is a plus; more showtimes mean more potential admissions. Last year, Ant-Man opened this weekend and did over $120M—but no one's expecting that kind of number this time around. Still, it should be a solid weekend. Paddington in Peru also opens, which is a good family option. It's already done well internationally, and here, it's predicted to do $16M+ over the four days. We'll see how it plays out! Paddington 1 opened at Thanksgiving in 2014 to $19M and Paddington 2 did $11M in early November 2017.

The weekend after the Super Bowl usually sees a bounce back. Last year, it was up 113%. Pre-pandemic, it was closer to 65%. We'll see what it's at this time around.
