Minecraft Fortifies Top Box Office Spot | Weekend of April 11th, 2025

It was another great weekend at the box office, with A Minecraft Movie maintaining its #1 position and a strong showing from several new releases. We saw a solid $48M+ from the top 5 premieres alone, indicating healthy audience engagement. Notably, the top 10 films held the same positions in both admissions and dollars, showcasing a clear alignment between what's drawing audiences and what's generating revenue.
A Minecraft Movie continued its impressive run, capturing over half of both admissions (56%) and revenue (53%). The film's positive reception and high "repeatability" factor are clearly driving its success.
The weekend was further energized by a slate of strong premieres, with the next five spots all occupied by new releases:
- The King of Kings, an animated film depicting the life of Jesus, performed exceptionally well for a faith-based movie, earning nearly $20M and capturing 17% of both admissions and revenue. This demonstrates the significant audience for this genre.
- The Amateur, starring Rami Malek, garnered attention and secured a spot in the top 3. While reviews were somewhat mixed, its R-rating contributed to a slightly higher revenue share (10%) compared to its admissions share (8%).
- Warfare, Drop, and The Chosen: Last Supper Part 3 also contributed to the strong performance of new releases, further diversifying the box office offerings.
The strength of A Minecraft Movie and the five successful premieres meant that the top 10 films accounted for a substantial 89% of total admissions, highlighting the concentration of audience interest in these key titles.
It's interesting to note that The Chosen: Last Supper Part 3, when combined with Parts 1 and 2 from previous weeks, has generated significant revenue. While the latest installment saw a dip compared to the original premiere, the overall success of the series points to a dedicated audience. It's possible that The King of Kings drew some of the same audience this week, given the shared religious themes.
Looking Ahead:
This weekend, the box office anticipates the arrival of several exciting new releases, timed perfectly for the Easter and Passover holidays:
- The Wedding Banquet, a modern reimagining of Ang Lee's film, arrives with positive buzz from Sundance, promising an enjoyable dramedy experience.
- Sinners, a horror film starring Hailee Stanfield and Michael B. Jordan, is generating considerable excitement. Early predictions suggest a strong opening, potentially reaching $30-$50M, fueled by near-universal acclaim and a "Horror Masterpiece" label from Ryan Coogler.
It's a close call whether A Minecraft Movie will maintain its #1 position for a third weekend, given the strong competition from Sinners. The coming weekend promises to be dynamic and further contribute to the box office's positive momentum!
